Wilkhahn Sustainability Report 2023-2025

Informe de sostenibilidad Wilkhahn 2023-2025

Responsibility in every sense

How can a carpentry company become a globally successful family-run furniture manufacturing company? In the case of Wilkhahn, this is easy to answer: by offering top quality, pioneering functionality and timeless design.

Since our founding in 1907, we have seen ourselves as an antidote to the throwaway society and have consistently ensured that our office furniture is durable and repairable. Sustainability has always been our top priority, which is why it has always been part of our board's mission:

When in doubt, we prioritize the green aspect of our business over quick profits.

Mission statement of the Wilkhahn Board of Directors, 1989.

But there is always room for improvement. And that also applies to sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches. We update our sustainability report frequently to illustrate what has already been achieved and to implement the next goals. The new sustainability report for 2023 to 2025 summarises our approach, what we have done so far and the goals for the future.

Sustainability as a matter of quality

Our core principles are reduce, reuse, recycle and do justice . That is why we constantly and exclusively develop long-lasting products made from high-quality materials, which helps to treat natural resources sparingly and reduce waste. But we also attach particular importance to fair production. And this includes treating our own employees, suppliers, distributors and customers fairly.

First and foremost, we consider sustainability to be a matter of quality. Because the longer people can use our products, the better the ecological and social footprint. Ultimately, it also means a better return on investment. We rely on the power of good design that outlives fads. We apply excellent craftsmanship and love for detail to process premium materials, such as metals, which are made exclusively from recycled material, vegan or low-emission leather, recycled materials and durable plastics.

In the future, we will increase the proportion of recycled metal and plastic furniture components and achieve a recyclability level of at least 90 percent for new products. In terms of social and financial sustainability, our sustainable office furniture promotes good health, well-being and creativity, all of which support productivity.

Sustainability awarded

We have won multiple awards for safe, durable, pollutant-free and low-emission office furniture manufactured under fair conditions, ensuring sustainability according to globally recognised standards . Wherever possible, we operate on the basis of circular economy principles. We have been EMAS certified consistently since 2001. The certification confirms that we are constantly improving our environmental performance and are committed to social responsibility.

To save carbon emissions, the majority of our heat and electricity consumption at our Bad Münder headquarters is environmentally friendly because we use biogas, solar thermal energy and photovoltaic systems. Accordingly, in 2022 the proportion of renewable energies was already 75 percent and we only purchase green electricity. As a result, we reduced our carbon footprint from 4,000 to less than 1,000 tons per year. Our goal is for the Wilkhahn headquarters to be at least 80 percent climate-neutral by 2025.

Our responsibility towards nature and the environment means that we strive to produce the best possible solutions in all areas and remain true to our maxim that “less is more” . This principle applies not only to our design, but also when it comes to avoiding waste, reducing emissions and using natural resources sparingly.
